Gold Silver Acid Testing Instructions

METAL TESTING

A popular method of relative accuracy for testing gold requires a set of testing needles with different tips of exact karat, a test stone and acids prepared for testing various karats.

For silver and base metals, use silver testing solutions.

The KASSOY GT301P Gold Test Kit contains the following:

3 plastic squeeze bottles containing test acids (1 each for 10kt, 14 kt, and 18kt)
1 set of test needles (10kt, 14 kt, 18 kt, and 22 kt)
1 test stone
1 storage box with dividers
Instructions

Squeeze bottles of acid for testing silver and both 22 kt gold and platinum are also available.

TO FIND THE KARAT

Rub a piece of the item to be tested on the stone and leave a visible deposit. Choose the needle nearest to the karat value you asssume the gold to be and rub it on the test stone, leaving a visible doeposit next to the first one. Apply a drop of the acid approximating the karatage to each mark at the same time.

If the two marks react to the acid at the same time, then the test sample is of similar karatage to the needle.
If the test sample mark reacts sooner than the needle mark, then the test sample is of lower karatage.
If the needle mark reacts sonner than the test sample mark, then the test sample is of higher karatage.

You should use a higher karat acid if there is little or no reaction to the acid. By repeated trials, the karat of the gold piece can be determined to a close approximation.

TESTING SILVER and OTHER METALS

File a deep notch in the time to be tested and aply a drop of silver testing solution in the notch. Different metal reac with the colors listed:

Brass - Dark Brown
Fine Silver - Bright Red
Copper - Brown
Silver 925 - Dark Red
Nickel - Blue
Silver 800 - Brown
Paladium - None
Silver 500 - Green
Gold - None
Lead - Yellow
Tin - Yellow

Premium Tri Electronics Gold Testers

Two premium electronic gold testers from Tri Electronics

The built in microprocessor makes gold testing simple. Simply squeeze the special gel from the probe, press the button for the color of gold you are testing, and obtain the reading in karats and percent. Also reads "Platinum" and "Not Gold." These units test yellow, white, green, and red gold.

The GTXL18 is our most efficient gold tester for those testing 18 karat and below. Reads from 6 karat - 18 karat. 3 year manufacturer's warranty.
Uses gel product code GEL.

The GTXL24P is a highly recommended gold tester for those who regularly test gold above 18 karat. Measures from 6 karat - 24 karat. It comes with instructional DVD. 3 year manufacturer's warranty.
Uses gel product code GEL24I.

Portable Tri Electronics Gold Testers

Tri Electronics Pocket-Size Electronic Gold Testers

Using an ecologically safe liquid, Tri Electronics two new gold testers accurately test both yellow and white gold and give their results on an easy to read digital display. The GTP18 tests both yellow and white gold from 6 to 18 karats; the GTP24 tests yellow gold from 6 karat up to 24 karat and white gold from 6 karat to 18 karats. Both read "Not Gold" for anything below 6 karats. Both testers use the GTP-TL testing liquid; one bottle gives about 400 tests.

Both operate on 3 supplied AAA batteries or with an optional AC/DC adapter. The GTP24 is covered by a 2-year manufacturer's warranty; the GTP18 by a one-year warranty.

Model GTP24 is shown at left - the GTP18 is similar.

Acid Gold Testing Kits

Gold/Silver Acid Testing Instructions
“The acid test” is the traditional method of testing gold: if the gold is the same karat as or higher than the test acid, it will not react. If it does react, it is of a lesser karat than the test acid. The needles included in the test kits provide a standard for comparison. The acids are easily dispensed from plastic squeeze bottles. Available in wood or plastic box.

Acid gold testing kits include:
• Set of test needles - 8kt, 10kt, 12kt 14kt and 18kt gold, .999 silver-tipped needles and instructions;
• Top quality test stone (1¾" x 1¼" x ³/₈";
• 10kt, 14kt, and 18kt acids in plastic, color coded squeeze bottles;
• Instructions.

Gold, silver, and platinum test acids; test needles; and test stones are also available separately.

Precious Metal and Gold Karat Testers

Quickly, easily and accurately determine purity of precious metals and gold karat by two weighings ( By measuring the Specific Gravity) : one with the piece in a water tank, the other normally. An internal computer does all the calculations for you. Works only for solid metal pieces without set stones.
